On August 23, Chicago’s Ukrainian community came together in Ukrainian Village for the Independence Unity March, commemorating the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s renewed independence.
Ukrainian flags filled the streets as families, community organizations, churches, cultural institutions, youth, veterans, and friends of Ukraine marched together in a powerful demonstration of unity and solidarity.
More than a celebration of independence, the march was a reminder of what Ukraine continues to defend today—its freedom, sovereignty, culture, and right to determine its own future. Participants honored those who have sacrificed their lives for Ukraine and stood in solidarity with those who continue to defend the country.
The gathering also demonstrated the strength of Chicago’s Ukrainian-American community. Generations came together with one message: despite the distance from Ukraine, we remain united, we remember, and we continue to stand with Ukraine.
As blue-and-yellow flags moved through the heart of Ukrainian Village, the march became a visible expression of pride, resilience, and hope for a free and peaceful Ukraine.
