Advocacy Group in Washington DC During Shutdown

Washington, D.C. felt quieter and emptier than usual that week due to the government shutdown. Yet even in those circumstances, many continued to work diligently without pay — a testament to their dedication and public service.

Despite the shutdown, the delegation successfully met with two U.S. Senators and House Representatives from all four of Iowa's congressional districts. They discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the pursuit of peace, and the importance of sustained U.S. leadership and bipartisan support for Ukraine's defense and recovery. It was also the time to make Russia pay with all frozen assets, strengthen sanctions, and ensure the safe return of Ukrainian children who had been taken from their homes.

Moments like that reminded them that advocacy does not pause, even when government operations do. The fight for freedom, peace, and justice continued — and every conversation brought them closer to a future where Ukraine could live in lasting peace and security.
