The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Illinois Division, solemnly marked the 105th anniversary of the Act of Union of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic. The Celebration of Unity took place on January 21, 2024, at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Chicago. A century has passed since the momentous gathering on January 22, 1919, at Sofia Square in Kyiv, where the Act of Reunification of the lands of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic into a united Ukraine was proclaimed. A year earlier, on January 22, 1918, the IV Universal of the Ukrainian Central Rada was adopted, declaring the full independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic. This document laid the necessary groundwork for the subsequent adoption of the Act of Union.
The event that occurred on January 21 in Chicago serves as a reminder to the world, particularly American congressmen, not only of the symbolism of the country's unification in a historical context but also as a guidepost for the future. The territorial unity of Ukraine is deemed the most crucial condition for victory in the war against Russia and the nation's future development.
During the official part of the event, speeches were delivered by Dr. Maria Dmytriv Kapeniak, President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (Illinois Division), congressmen Michael Quigley, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Danny Davis. The keynote speaker was Sergiy Kyslytsya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who played a crucial role in representing Ukrainian interests during the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine.
A surprise at the event was the presence of General Morozov, who led the military forces in Ukraine in 1991, heroically supporting independence and becoming the first Minister of Defense of Ukraine. Also, Andriy Dobriansky, Vice President and Communications Director of the UCCA Main Office, delivered a speech. Among the attendees were representatives of the Ukrainian community in Chicago and the state of Illinois, federal and local legislative and executive authorities of the United States, the consular corps of Chicago, including Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago Serhiy Koledov and Consul Yevhen Drobot, and the Consuls General of Poland and Lithuania. Additionally, defenders and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, undergoing treatment in the USA after injuries thanks to the Revived Soldiers Ukraine foundation, were present.
Український Конгресовмй Комітет Америки, відділ в Ілінойсі, урочисто відзначив 105-у річницю Акту Злуки Української Народної Республіки і Західно-Української Народної Республіки. Свято Соборності відбулося 21 січня 2024 року в Українському Культурному Осередку в Чикаго. Минуло ціле століття від часу, коли 22 січня 1919 року в м. Києві на Софіївській площі пройшли урочисті збори, на яких був проголошений Акт возз’єднання земель Української Народної Республіки і Західно-Української Народної Республіки в єдину Велику Україну. Роком раніше, 22 січня 1918 р. було прйнято IV Універсал УЦР, яким проголошувалася повна незалежність УНР. Саме цей документ став необхідним підґрунтям для подальшого прийняття Акту Злуки. Подія яка відбулася 21 січня в Чикаґо є нагадуванням світові, зокрема американським конгресменам не лише про символізм в історичному контексті об’єднання країни, а як орієнтир майбутнього, адже саме територіальна єдність України є найважливішими умовою для перемоги у війні з Росією та розбудови держави в майбутньому. Під час офіційної частини заходу до присутніх з промовами звернулись: Президент Українського Конгресового Комітету Америки (відділ Іллінойс) др. Марія Дмитрів Капеняк, конгресмени Майкл Квіглі, Раджа Крішнамурті та Денні Девіс. Головний доповідач Сергій Кислиця, постійний представника при ООН, був головним гостем – доповідачем. Посол в ООН виконує важливу місію, представляючи українські інтереси під час війни, розпочатої Росією проти України. Несподіванкою на події була присутність Генерала Морозова, який очолював військо в Україні в 1991 році і героїчно став на стороні незалежності і став першим міністром оборони України. Також виступив Андрій Добрянський , віце президент та директор комунікацій головної управи УККА. Серед присутніх - представники української громади міста Чикаго та штату Іллінойс, федеральних та місцевих законодавчих і виконавчих органів влади США, консульського корпусу міста Чикаго -Генеральний консул України в Чикаго Сергій Коледов та консул Євген Дробот, генеральні консули Польщі та Литви, захисники, воїни ЗСУ, які знаходяться на лікуванні в США після поранень завдяки фонду Revived Soldiers Ukraine.
