Advocacy in Washington, D.C.

Over the course of just two days, the Midwest Delegation met with 11 senators (8 Republicans, 3 Democrats) and 14 members of Congress. The group included both experienced advocates and first-time participants, all united in their mission to strengthen U.S. support for Ukraine.

They underscored a key statistic—92% of Americans support Ukraine, according to a recent poll. Their advocacy focused on securing peace through strength, pushing for security guarantees, seeking justice for war crimes, and demanding the return of trafficked children and prisoners of war. They also emphasized the global consequences of allowing Putin to go unpunished, the threats posed by disinformation, and the reality that Russia is both vulnerable and defeatable. In addition, they discussed the impact of frozen Russian assets and how the war’s outcome directly affects U.S. national security and strategic interests.

The delegation urged lawmakers to back key legislation, develop new policies, and leverage U.S. influence in peace negotiations. Their message was clear: never underestimate the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Their defiance against the Soviet empire was not driven by American weapons but by an unshakable refusal to live under autocratic rule.

Key Observations:

  • Washington is overwhelmed with advocacy efforts, as the radical measures of the new administration have created a sense of chaos and unpredictability. This has prompted many to assert their rights and demand action from their representatives. Amid this flood of issues, Ukraine’s cause risks being drowned out and must be amplified to remain a priority.
  • Lawmakers are well-informed about the situation—understanding Russia’s aggression, the financial scope of military aid, and how those funds are reinvested into the U.S. economy. Yet, few are willing to publicly defend these facts or issue clarifying statements.
  • Democrats are vocal but appear politically ineffective and increasingly demoralized.
  • Many Republicans acknowledge that Russia has never been and will never be a U.S. ally, yet only a handful are willing to say so publicly.
  • The far-right continues to actively spread and promote disinformation, further complicating efforts to sustain strong bipartisan support for Ukraine.
